Back in 1870, the vicar of Silsden in Yorkshire became anxious about two large dangerous elm trees in the churchyard so he asked his church warden, Jeremiah Green, the local coal-merchant, to arrange to have them felled. In doing so, he had unknowingly sown the seed that was to grow into one of the best known timber companies of its day – Arthur Green of Silsden Ltd.
